ASK WHY IN EVERY RELIGIOUS PRACTICE

Written by Astro De Great

Have you ever paused in the middle of a religious ritual and asked yourself, “Why am I doing this?”
Why do we fast on certain days? Why do we pray a particular way? Why do some kneel while others stand? Why do we chant words we do not fully understand? Why do some wear white garments, while others cover their heads or sit on mats?

The truth is  we don’t ask “why” enough.
And that silence is dangerous.

The Power of Asking “Why?”

Asking “why” is not rebellion. It is revelation.
It is the key that opens the door from blind tradition to understanding. God never feared questions  He invited them. Jesus Himself, at the temple as a boy, was found asking questions and giving answers. The Creator of the universe never punished curiosity  in fact, He nurtured it.

When we ask why, we’re not doubting God  we’re pursuing Him.

Asking “why” helps us:

  • Understand the meaning behind the actions.
  • Avoid man-made manipulations that have crept into faith.
  • Pass on a living truth to the next generation, not just dry rituals.
  • Engage our minds, not just our emotions or fears.

Religion Without Reason Becomes Ritual Without Power

Many people have practiced the same traditions for decades  lighting candles, anointing with oil, repeating chants, attending certain feasts, wearing certain colors  but have no idea why.

Some were told: “Just do it, that’s how it’s done. Don’t ask too many questions.”

But truth is never afraid of being examined.
Blind practice can lead to spiritual laziness, and worse  spiritual bondage.

Let’s consider a few examples:

  • Why do some churches pour water on people’s heads during baptism, while others immerse them fully in water?
  • Why are women expected to cover their hair in some religions but not in others?
  • Why do we break bread and wine in communion? What does it symbolize beyond the routine?

You see, these aren’t disrespectful questions  they’re meaningful ones. And when we know the why, our faith becomes personal, not just inherited.

Inherited Faith vs. Discovered Faith

There’s a vast difference between practicing a religion because you inherited it, and living it because you understand it.
Many people today are religious because their parents were, their culture demanded it, or because it’s all they’ve ever known. But religion that’s not examined becomes tradition, and tradition without truth leads to spiritual ignorance.

You can attend every service, know every hymn, even lead prayers  and still not know God.

That’s why you must ask:

  • Why do we believe this?
  • Where did this doctrine come from?
  • Does this practice align with God’s heart or is it cultural adaptation?

Asking these questions is not about leaving your faith  it’s about going deeper into it.

The Danger of Manipulated Faith

Sadly, in many places, religion has been used to control, not to connect.
People fear their religious leaders more than they fear God. They obey without questioning because they’ve been taught that asking is rebellion. But God is not fragile. He does not fall apart when you question His ways.

On the contrary, the Bible says:

Come, let us reason together, says the Lord…”
(Isaiah 1:18)

Your spiritual life is too precious to be placed entirely in another man’s hands.

Ask why.
Ask what.
Ask how.

Let God teach you. Let the Spirit lead you. Let the scriptures guide you.

Faith That Thinks Is Faith That Lasts

Asking “why” doesn’t remove faith  it refines it.

A child who asks why the sky is blue isn’t trying to insult nature  they’re trying to understand creation.
A believer who asks why they tithe isn’t greedy  they’re seeking purpose.
A worshipper who asks why a certain song is sung isn’t disrespectful  they’re chasing revelation.

The more you understand why you do what you do, the more your worship becomes intentional, your prayers become authentic, and your relationship with God becomes real.

Final Thoughts: The Call to Intelligent Worship

God gave you a brain. He also gave you a soul. One shouldn’t work without the other.

Worship God in spirit and in truth  not in fear and assumption.
Don’t settle for a faith that is loud in expression but empty in meaning.
Don’t just go through the motions  understand the mission behind them.

So the next time you fast, pray, sing, give, dance, kneel, shout, or stay silent  ask yourself:
“Why am I doing this?”

If you can’t answer it, it’s time to search.
Because real faith isn’t afraid of questions  it’s where truth begins.

Ask Why. Seek Truth. Find God.
