DOES SIN ACTUALLY EXIST?

INTRODUCTION:

The Mirror Nobody Wants to Face

Imagine a man standing in front of a mirror but this mirror doesn’t reflect his suit or his smile. It reveals something deeper: his thoughts, motives, secrets, and hidden struggles. At first, he looks away. Then, he smashes the mirror.

Why? Because what he saw was too real.

That mirror is what sin is. It doesn’t flatter. It exposes. And because it reveals the uncomfortable truth about our spiritual condition, many deny it or redefine it. But the question remains: Does sin actually exist?

Let’s dive into this deeply human, spiritual, and urgent reality.

CHAPTER ONE:

WHAT IS SIN?

To understand sin, we must first remove the robes of religion and get to the root.

Sin is not just what you do it’s what broke you.
It is the force that separates man from God, disrupts peace, twists motives, and makes wrong feel right.

Illustration:

Think of sin like a virus in a phone’s operating system. Even if the screen looks fine, the phone begins to misbehave. It slows down. Apps crash. The user gets frustrated. You can still use the phone, but it’s not working as it should.

That’s what sin does to us. We were created to reflect God’s image pure, loving, truthful, creative but sin distorted the code. It affects our behavior, choices, and even how we see ourselves.

CHAPTER TWO:

THE ORIGIN OF SIN

Long before there was an apple in Eden, there was pride in heaven.

Sin started with a beautiful being Lucifer. He wasn’t a monster. He was an angel. But pride grew in his heart (Isaiah 14:12–15). He wanted to be like God, not follow God. And that pride led to rebellion. He fell and became Satan.

Then, in the Garden of Eden, Satan introduced that same rebellion to Adam and Eve. He didn’t force them he seduced them with a lie: “You will be like God.”

That one decision opened the door. Sin entered humanity like poison in water, and since then, every person is born into this broken stream.

CHAPTER THREE:

THE WEAPONIZATION OF SIN AGAINST CHRISTIANS

Now that we understand what sin is and where it came from, let’s talk about how sin has become a weapon not just a wound.

1. Condemnation Over Conviction

Story: Michael, a young Christian, made a mistake. He felt so ashamed that he stopped going to church. Every time he tried to pray, a voice in his head whispered, “You’re not worthy. God can’t use you anymore.”

That’s not God speaking. That’s condemnation a tool Satan uses to isolate you from the very God who can heal you.

Conviction draws you back to God.
Condemnation pushes you away.

2. Religious Control

Some churches use sin as a way to dominate people. Public shaming, spiritual bullying, or heavy-handed rules turn the gospel into a courtroom instead of a hospital. Jesus never did that. He confronted sin but with love, not humiliation.

3. Legalism Instead of Love

Religion often makes sin a checklist: don’t wear this, don’t watch that, don’t say this. While discipline matters, when love is removed, it becomes a burden. Jesus didn’t die for a checklist He died for a relationship.

4. Distraction from the Cross

If all you see is how sinful you are, you’ll never see how powerful Jesus is. Sin becomes a magnifying glass making our failures bigger than God’s grace.

CHAPTER FOUR:

ILLUSTRATION  THE FALLEN SOLDIER

Imagine a soldier wounded in battle. Bleeding, exhausted, disoriented. He stumbles toward a hospital. But instead of being welcomed, the nurses point at his wounds and say, “You’re too dirty to come in here.”

That’s how many Christians feel when they sin.

But Jesus is the kind of doctor who runs to the bleeding soldier. He carries him inside, cleans his wounds, and restores him. He doesn’t ask for perfection He offers healing.

CHAPTER FIVE:

SO, DOES SIN ACTUALLY EXIST?

Yes. Not only does it exist it explains the human condition.

  • Why do people kill, lie, and betray?
  • Why do we hurt the ones we love?
  • Why do we feel empty even when we have everything?

Because sin is real.
But here’s the hope:

“Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.” — Romans 5:20

CHAPTER SIX:

WHAT SHOULD WE DO WITH THIS TRUTH?

  1. Acknowledge It, Don’t Deny It
Pretending sin doesn’t exist doesn’t free you it traps you in darkness.
  2. Run to the Cross, Not From It
Jesus didn’t come to shame you. He came to save you. No matter how deep the stain, His blood is deeper.
  3. Stop Weaponizing It Against Others
We are not called to throw stones we are called to show grace. We correct in love, not superiority.
  4. Walk in the Spirit, Not in Fear
Sin may exist, but it has no power over you when you walk with the Spirit (Romans 8:1–4). You are not just a sinner you are a son, a daughter, a soldier.

CONCLUSION:

THE BROKEN MIRROR

Remember the man with the mirror?

What if he didn’t smash it? What if he faced it and said, “God, I see what’s broken. Help me.”

That’s the beginning of healing. That’s the power of grace.

Sin is real. But so is Jesus.

And the blood of Jesus doesn’t just cover sin it breaks its power.
