It’s a question as old as sin itself: between the devil and human beings, who is truly more evil?
At first glance, many would quickly point fingers at the devil the symbolic and spiritual personification of evil. The tempter, the deceiver, the adversary. But if we look beyond the myths and into the real world, we might find a shocking truth: that humans, who were made in God’s image, might have stretched evil further than even hell imagined.
Let’s begin from the origin.
The devil rebelled once. One grand act of pride, ambition, and insubordination. He fell. But humans? We rebel daily with awareness, with planning, with detailed scheming. The devil whispers once; humans build an entire system of oppression out of a single suggestion. The devil planted the seed, but humans built the tree, harvested the fruit, packaged it, and sold it back to the world.
The Devil The Architect of Evil?
In Christian theology, the devil Lucifer was once an angel, glorious and radiant. He fell not because he killed or destroyed, but because of pride. He wanted to be like God. Since then, he has become the adversary, the tempter, the one who prowls like a lion seeking whom to devour.
Yes, the devil tempted Eve. But he didn’t force her hand. He suggested. She acted.
The devil sowed the idea of betrayal into Judas. But Judas made the journey, negotiated the price, kissed the Master.
So maybe the devil is the architect of evil, but he’s not the one executing the blueprints. People are.
Humanity The Engineers of Evil?
Now, let’s talk about people creatures with free will, a conscience, and the breath of God in their lungs.
It is humans who have built gas chambers to annihilate fellow humans.
It is humans who have sold others into slavery not for survival, but for wealth.
It is humans who abuse children, betray trust, start wars for ego, murder in cold blood, and smile while doing it.
Evil in humans is not always triggered by temptation; sometimes it’s birthed from pure desire. A desire to dominate, to control, to hurt.
Unlike the devil, humans feel the pain they cause others and often still continue. That is a chilling depth of evil. Even the devil cannot experience guilt. But humans? They silence it.
Who Then Is Worse?
The devil’s rebellion was a moment; humanity’s rebellion is continuous. The devil may have created the virus, but man made a bioweapon. The devil may have invented lust, but man monetized it into an industry. The devil may whisper lies, but man has turned deceit into culture, policy, politics even religion.
The devil doesn’t need to do much anymore. He retired early in some places. He has handed over his ministry to men who now do his work even more efficiently without needing horns or a tail.
In some churches, pastors manipulate the name of God not because the devil told them to, but because greed and pride have taken the pulpit. In government houses, leaders hoard what belongs to millions, letting children die of hunger, while they eat like gods. No devil needed. Just the flesh, the will, the conscience of man corrupted beyond recognition.
The Disturbing Truth
What makes man’s evil more terrifying is that he was created good. He had access to truth, to conscience, to God. He wasn’t damned from the beginning he walked away. A man must step over his conscience, ignore the cries of others, silence the voice of God, and still press forward into evil. That is not just demonic that’s volitional, intentional evil.
And therein lies the deeper evil: that man, knowing full well what he does, still does it.
Conclusion
So, between the devil and the people who is more evil?
The devil may have invented the idea, but humans perfected the method. The devil planted the spark, but people started the wildfire. The devil tempts, but humans have become teachers of wickedness.
It is not just about the presence of evil, but the depth to which one is willing to go to nurture, protect, and perpetuate it. And sadly, mankind has become a professor in the classroom of evil graduating from sin to systematized wickedness.
In truth, the devil might still be learning from man.
